About this Program
The Bachelor of Applied Arts (B.A.A.) in teaching French, German, or Spanish is offered through the Department of Education in conjunction with the Department of World Languages and Cultures. Students are fully immersed in the language they will teach through coursework, volunteering in the Duluth community, and studying abroad.
The Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP) offers a variety of content areas for specialization. Classes include a combination of specific content areas and teacher education coursework. Within the teacher education program, students have hands-on exposure to classrooms through volunteer experiences, observation, and student teaching.
Teaching French This Bachelor of Applied Arts prepares students for MN licensure to teach French in grades K-12. Students may also pursue a French Studies B.A. with satisfactory completion of 12 non-overlapping upper-division credits of French electives beyond the requirements for both degrees.
Teaching German This Bachelor of Applied Arts prepares students for MN licensure to teach German in grades K-12. Students may also pursue a German Studies B.A. with satisfactory completion of 12 non-overlapping upper-division credits of French electives beyond the requirements for both degrees.
Teaching Spanish This Bachelor of Applied Arts prepares students for MN licensure to teach Spanish in grades K-12. Students may also pursue a Spanish Studies B.A. with satisfactory completion of 12 non-overlapping upper-division credits of French electives beyond the requirements for both degrees.

Career Possibilities
Entry level positions include elementary, middle or high school teacher, translator, interpreter. Advanced degree positions include Dean of Students, Principal, School Counselor, Superintendent.
Admissions and Scholarships
Students in CEHSP are eligible for more than 100 scholarships each academic year typically totaling $370,000 annually. For more information on scholarship opportunities, visit the CEHSP scholarship webpage.
UMD's Education Department has over 25 scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $10,000. Scholarships vary in criteria and some are specifically for subject areas or students entering student teaching in the US or starting their student teaching abroad.
