About This Program

The Communication Sciences & Disorders Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) degree provides you with a foundation in human communication processes, disorders, and differences related to speech, language, and hearing.

Students who earn this degree pursue a variety of careers in education, healthcare, administration, and more. The program prepares you for graduate study in speech-language pathology, audiology, and other advanced degrees.

Program Highlights

  • Prepares you for admission to professional graduate degree or licensure programs in speech language pathology or audiology
  • You move through the program in a cohort, developing supportive peer relationships, small class sizes, engaged instructors, and the opportunity for experiential learning
  • Over the last decade, the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders has provided more than $1.8 million in free services to the Twin Ports community through the Robert F. Pierce Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic
  • Optional Clinical Practicum available for Speech Language Pathology Assistant certification and an optional Audiology Clinical Practical experience
  • Faculty specialties in: aphasia, augmentative and alternative communication stuttering, voice, language development and disorders, articulation, phonology, phonetics, and audiology

Research & Experiential Learning

  • Research focused on neurogenic communication disorders, including those associated with Parkinson’s disease, stroke, and brain injury. You are encouraged to participate in these initiatives through independent studies and UROP opportunities
  • The Parkinson Voice Project’s SPEAK OUT! Therapy is used to improve access to treatment and assess its effectiveness on voice and swallowing functions. Part of a national campaign aimed at increasing therapy accessibility by establishing university-affiliated research and treatment centers in every U.S. state. This study utilizes fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES)
  • Research utilizing Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to investigate brain activity during neurorehabilitation. TMS offers a non-invasive method for assessing changes in brain function following stroke and traumatic brain injury. Faculty members from various disciplines, including psychology, exercise science, and music, are also planning to incorporate TMS into collaborative, multidisciplinary research efforts
  • The CSD program promotes experiential, cross-disciplinary research that advances clinical practice and enriches student learning

Scholarships

Current students in CEHSP may be eligible for both merit-based and need-based scholarships. More than 100 scholarships are available each academic year.
