About This Program
Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies is an interdisciplinary field that includes the study of the experiences, conditions, and social realities of women of different races, ethnicities, nationalities, religions, classes, abilities, and sexual orientations in a global context; the ways in which gender distinctions and the construction and intersection of gender, sexuality, race, and class have affected human lives, and feminist scholarship.
The program provides you with a solid background in knowledge about gender, sexuality, race, class, and international issues; feminist analysis; critical thinking; and oral and written communication. The program prepares you for meaningful participation and contribution in an inclusive society, to be local, national, and global citizens, and to contribute meaningfully in a diverse workplace. Finally, the program intends to provide a nurturing environment for the whole person—to help you find your own strengths, gifts, and path, and to raise awareness about local and global contexts of gender and equality.
Program Highlights
- The program is very personalized with many seminar-style classes. Faculty get to know you and commit to ensuring that you realize your full capabilities and potential.
- Courses are very interactive and often discussion-based; you learn through exploration and discovery.
- In addition to our core WGSS faculty, we have faculty across multiple disciplines who teach WGSS classes (e.g., American Indian Studies, Art History, Criminology, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology). You will encounter a diverse range of perspectives and course topics in WGSS, such as grassroots activism, gender and criminal justice, media analysis, LGBTQI issues, racial justice, public health, food, and global issues.
