Do you want to help organizations manage their human capital in ways that benefit both the business and its people? If so, the Human Resource Management (HRM) major may be a great fit for you.
This major equips you with a strategic understanding of how to plan, develop, and manage the workforce in today’s complex and competitive environment. You’ll learn how effective HR practices can enhance employee well-being and organizational performance.
Program Highlights

- Gain hands-on knowledge in recruitment and retention strategies, compensation and benefits, training and development, and employee relations
- Learn how to align employee goals with broader organizational strategy

- Participate in the UMD SHRM Chapter, which offers networking events, speakers, career-building workshops, and student competitions
Research & Experiential Learning
- Active involvement in UMD’s SHRM Chapter, which hosts guest speakers, employer site visits, and regional/national student events
- Networking with industry professionals at LSBE Company Days
- The Student Professional Engagement Program (PEP), which exposes you to co-curricular content and soft skills development
- Access to student-run clubs and collaborative projects across LSBE
Student Internships
LSBE’s in-house internship program is led by a dedicated director who manages over 200 internships annually. The director works closely with you and employers to ensure meaningful, career-relevant experiences.
HRM majors regularly intern with organizations such as: 3M, Target, SPS Commerce, Cintas, Sherwin-Williams, Land O’Lakes, UnitedHealth Group, and many others—including school-year internships in Duluth or remote roles.
