About this Program

The Communication minor pairs with almost any major and is fundamental for most careers.  Doctors, lawyers, engineers, counselors, politicians, etc., all benefit from studying communication.  Students who minor in communication at UMD graduate with an understanding of interpersonal communication, the functions and structures of mass media, the uses of persuasion, and the nature of communication within organizations.

Students who minor in communication at UMD graduate with an understanding of human interpersonal communication interactions, the functions of the media in today’s society, the uses of persuasion, and the nature of communication within organizations.

Acquired Skills

Communication minors develops skills and abilities valuable in public and private arenas;
Although Communication minors do not take as many credits as Communication majors, nevertheless they will develop the following skills:

  • Oral and written communication
  • Listening, clarifying, questioning and responding
  • Analytical, creative and critical thinking

 Communication minors also enhance the following abilities:

  • Audience analysis
  • Persuasion, Influence, Presentation of alternative perspectives
  • Working well in teams

Career Possibilities

Communication is both a science and an art leveraged for sharing information, achieving understanding, influencing beliefs and behaviors, creating and spreading culture, resolving conflicts and conveying emotions.  Whether the student becomes a politician or a software-engineer, effective communication is a solid foundation for both career and personal life.

The majors students choose will direct career choices, but the Communication minor will give students a background that will allow them to develop solid career paths and to set themselves apart from fellow employees who haven’t the skills and abilities acquired from the study of Communication.

Admissions and Scholarships

CAHSS is proud to be able to offer over 90 alumni and donor funded scholarships to our students each year.  In total over $190,000 is awarded out to CAHSS majors and some minors as well.  Each department facilitates the process for their specific scholarships and students are also encouraged to apply for CAHSS-wide scholarships offered to students in any field.
