About This Program
Are you a “people person” who also enjoys working with numbers? Do you want to make investment recommendations or develop comprehensive financial plans? Are you passionate about guiding others to make informed decisions about their financial futures? If so, the Financial Planning major may be a great fit for you.
This major teaches you to apply financial strategies and tools to help individuals and families make smart, ethical financial decisions. You’ll learn to take a high-level view of a client’s entire financial picture and create plans that align with each client’s long-term goals.
Program Highlights
- You can network with business professionals, join the Financial Planning Club, and gain experience through hands-on learning opportunities
- Learn to use modern financial technologies to analyze investments, risks, retirement needs, insurance, and
estate planning - Apply knowledge of insurance policies and risk management strategies to develop tailored financial plans for clients
- The program is led by our Instructor of Finance, who also runs a multi-location financial planning practice and serves on several local boards. Along with teaching courses and coordinating industry partnerships, he holds multiple professional designations and brings current, real-world expertise to the classroom
Research & Experiential Learning
- The Financial Planning Club, which hosts industry professionals and alumni, organizes off-campus events, and participates in the Financial Planning Association of Minnesota’s annual symposium
- Access to additional business-related clubs open to all students
- Interaction with professionals during LSBE Company Days
- The Student Professional Engagement Program (PEP), which exposes you to co-curricular content and soft skills development
Student Internships
LSBE offers an in-house internship program led by a dedicated director who oversees more than 200 internships annually. The director works with both you and employers to ensure valuable, real-world experiences.
Students regularly secure internships at top companies, including: 3M, Cintas, Google, Hormel, Fastenal, Land O’Lakes, Minnesota Vikings, Target, UnitedHealth Group, Sherwin-Williams, Taylor Corporation, and SPS Commerce—as well as school-year and remote internships in the Duluth area.
