About This Program

In the Interdisciplinary Studies B.A., you develop the capacity to integrate knowledge and modes of thinking from two or more fields to solve a problem, create a product, explain a phenomenon, and more. It's different than pursuing a double major or a major and a minor.

The Interdisciplinary Studies B.A. is for those whose educational goals can best be met by integrating courses from several fields of study. This major is unique because it is individually designed; you work with faculty advisers to design your curriculum around a chosen theme. Your program might encompass the natural sciences, social sciences, cultural studies, fine arts, technical and professional fields, or a combination of these.

This major offers two tracks: an Individualized Plan that allows you to choose the emphasis of your major, and a Medical Arts and Sciences Plan that prepares you for health-related careers. Both plans require you to choose the specific focus of your program and craft a curriculum to fit that focus.

Unlike many UMD majors, Interdisciplinary Studies is available only by formal application and approval by your faculty advisors and the Interdisciplinary Studies Program Director.

Recent creative and successful program titles have included the following:

  • Human-Centered Urban Design
  • Community-Centered Sustainable Entrepreneurship
  • Sports Business Management
  • Food and Environmental Studies
  • Creative Community Empowerment
  • Peace Studies

Program Highlights

  • UMD has established a Humanities for Food Justice initiative focused on Humanities-based and Community-Engaged approaches to advancing food and environmental justice in our region. Students who are passionate about this subject can design their own major and pursue an Interdisciplinary Studies B.A. through an Individualized Plan
  • Recent successful program titles demonstrate creative ways to combine your interests and design your own major
